The importance of storing your will safely

Your will needs to kept safe and secure, but not so secure that no one can find it when it’s needed.  Although there is no formal requirement as to where a Will should be stored, it should obviously be kept in a safe place so that it can be located at the time of your death.  You may spend a great deal of time ensuring your Will is kept up to date throughout your life, but if it cannot be found when it’s needed then it will be assumed that it does not exist.

Your Will should not be kept at home due to the obvious consequences of fire or theft etc. If your Will is damaged or defaced in any way then this could cast doubts over its validity and the probate office could declare your Will as invalid. Options for storing your will include local solicitors or banks, however both will involve a fee.  You can also store your Will at the Probate Registry, again there is a fee for this service and strict procedures for withdrawing your Will from safe keeping should you wish to make any amendments.

FutureSafe offer secure storage with the Storage & Update package. Lifetime storage is included with this package and you will be provided with copies of your Will along with confirmation of its secure location to keep at home ensuring that your loved ones can locate your Will when it is required.
